Dystocia means difficult or obstructed labor, and it's an emergency for both mother and unborn puppies or kittens. Call your vet right away if strong contractions last more than 30–60 minutes with no delivery, more than 2–4 hours pass between newborns, or your pet is exhausted, distressed, or has green/dark discharge before the first is born. Fast action can save lives, and some cases need an emergency C-section.

When to call the vet during labor
Contact your vet or emergency clinic immediately if you see any of these during whelping or queening:
- Strong, frequent contractions for 30–60 minutes with no puppy or kitten produced.
- More than 2–4 hours between newborns when more are still inside.
- Weak or no contractions more than 4–6 hours after labor should have started, or well past the due date.
- Green, black, or bloody discharge before the first newborn is delivered (green can be normal only after one has arrived).
- A newborn visible or stuck in the birth canal for more than a few minutes.
- The mother is trembling, collapsing, very painful, or exhausted.
When in doubt, call. Delays in dystocia can be fatal for the babies and the mother.
What normal labor looks like
Knowing what's normal makes problems easier to spot. Pregnancy lasts roughly 63 days in dogs and cats. Labor has three stages:
- Stage 1: restlessness, nesting, panting, reduced appetite, and a drop in body temperature (in dogs, often below about 99°F within 24 hours of labor). This stage can last 6–12 hours or more.
- Stage 2: visible contractions and delivery of each newborn, usually every 30–60 minutes, though rest periods happen.
- Stage 3: passing the placenta after each newborn.

What causes dystocia
Difficult birth can come from the mother (maternal factors) or the babies (fetal factors):

Your vet will assess the mother and babies and choose a plan based on how things are progressing:
- Examination and imaging (X-ray and ultrasound) to count the young, check their size and position, and monitor fetal heart rates.
- Medical management — calcium and/or oxytocin to strengthen contractions may help mild cases with an open birth canal and no obstruction.
- Emergency C-section when there's an obstruction, fetal distress, a very large newborn, or when medical management fails. This is often the safest option and is planned in advance for high-risk breeds.
- Newborn resuscitation and aftercare for the delivered babies and the mother.
Preparing for a safe delivery
Preparation reduces emergencies:
- Confirm pregnancy and the due date with your vet, and discuss whether a planned C-section is likely for your breed.
- Set up a clean, quiet whelping area a week or two ahead.
- Near term, take the mother's temperature twice daily so you can recognize the pre-labor drop.
- Keep your vet's and the emergency clinic's numbers handy, and know the drive time.
- Watch labor closely and keep a written timeline of each contraction phase and delivery.
